Things to know before you enter Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity is not for the weak. 7 things to know before you decide.

Everyone tells you cybersecurity pays well and the industry is desperate for people.

That is only half true, and the other half is what actually decides whether this is right for you.

Here are seven honest points, each with both sides in view.

1. The demand is real, but it is not where beginners think it is.

Cloud adoption, AI systems and remote work have expanded what companies need to defend faster than they can hire for it. That part is genuine. But the widely quoted figure of millions of unfilled roles sits mostly at senior and specialised levels, not entry level. Explicitly beginner openings are scarce and heavily contested. The demand is real. It is just not waiting for you at the door.

2. You do not need a degree, but you do need proof.

This is one of the few tech fields where employers care more about what you can show than where you studied. CompTIA Security+ is the baseline most HR filters screen for, and it costs a fraction of a degree. But the certificate alone gets you past the filter, not the interview. Without a home lab and real projects behind it, it is just paper.
